World number one Scottie Scheffler returns to Valhalla just hours after being arrested earlier in the day, his intention now seemingly being to play the US PGA Championship second round.

Scottie Scheffler has returned to Valhalla ahead of his US PGA Championship just hours after being arrested earlier in the day.

On Friday morning, the world number one was making his way to the grounds at the Louisville course to prepare for his early second-round tee time.

However, a fatal traffic accident before his arrival led to numerous road closures and delays, with a heavy police presence at the scene.

As reported by ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, Scheffler attempted to continue en route to the course without permission, leading to his car being immediately stopped by police.

The 27-year-old was subsequently handcuffed and put into a police vehicle, a video from Darlington showing a police officer say that Scheffler was "on his way to jail".

The police file of Scheffler has since been published online, along with charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Scheffler was officially booked at 7.28am, local time, with his rescheduled tee time - due to the traffic accident and wet weather - set at 10.08am.

However, at 9.12am, Scheffler was seen on the grounds of Valhalla, with the American naturally keen to continue his bid to win another major title.

Scheffler releases statement

Before heading to the practice range, Scheffler also release a statement, via the PGA Tour, to put forward his side of matters and express his condolences for the worker who lost their life.

Where does Scheffler feature after first round?

On his first competitive appearance since April 22, as well as his partner Meredith giving birth to their first child on May 8, Scheffler shot four-under-par on Thursday.

While he remains five shots adrift of leader Xander Schauffele, Scheffler sits in a tie for 11th as the early starters being to get their rounds underway.
