The 20-year-old finished his round on nine-under 63 on the North Course at Torrey Pines.

"Any time you can shoot a lower score than a 66 or 65 and you can really get it deep and be in a zone and not worry about what your score is... that's special," ESPN quotes him as saying.

"That's proving that I can play my best golf when it matters on a PGA Tour venue. Each time you can do that, you get more and more confident that you can do it more often."

Overnight leader Stewart Cink slipped to second on the leaderboard at the end of Friday's play, as he hit a 3-wood from 280 yards onto the green at the par-five ninth on the South Course for a two-putt birdie and a 71.

Nicolas Colsaerts has sole control of the third position, while Billy Horschel and Marc Leishman are tied for fourth spot.

Meanwhile, world number one Tiger Woods had another disappointing day in his first tournament in six weeks.

The defending champion did not make birdie on any of the par-fives for the second round in a row and finished on a 71 following a three-putt bogey on the par-five ninth hole on the North Course, nine shots off the pace.
