The former world number one consolidated his 63 on Friday with five birdies on Saturday to hold a one-shot lead over Danny Willett.
The Englishman made inroads up the leaderboard after shooting 65 to earn himself a two-shot cushion over Ross Fisher, who sits in third place.
The remainder of the field are eight shots off the lead, with Marcel Siem appearing to be the only player who could mount a late bid to win the title in Sun City.
