Mackenzie Hughes takes early lead at RSM Classic

Canada's Mackenzie Hughes shoots an opening-round 61 to take the lead at the RSM Classic.

Mackenzie Hughes has opened up a one-shot lead at the RSM Classic after recording a first-round score of 61.

The Canadian is competing in just his fifth event on the PGA Tour but he hit nine birdies during a faultless round to top the standings.

American pair Stewart Cink and Jonathan Byrd are in a share of second position, while a group of four players sit one shot further adrift.

Brandt Snedeker and Jim Furyk are in contention in a tie for eighth place, but Ian Poulter and Luke Donald face another battle to make the cut.

The Englishmen recorded three-under-par rounds of 67 but they were only enough to leave them with a share of 60th spot.
