The world number 155 hit eight birdies at St Andrews to establish a clear advantage over Florian Fritsch, who went one shot better on the Kingsbarns course.

France's Benjamin Hebert is one shot further adrift in third, while Kiradech Aphibarnrat is one of four players in a tie for fourth.

American Brooks Koepka, the highest-ranked player in the tournament, is six shots off the lead in eighth place.
