Luke Donald ends the first day of the US Open at the top of the leaderboard with five holes of his opening round left to play.

Luke Donald has taken an early lead at the end of the first day of the US Open, sitting at four-under-par with five holes of his opening round left to play.

The Briton moved to the top of the leaderboard ahead of Phil Mickelson, who completed an excellent first round of 67 to finish at three-under.

Adam Scott and Lee Westwood also got off to positive starts on a day where the weather disrupted proceedings on two occasions, with the former ending the day on the 11th hole at three-under and the latter on the 13th at one-under.

Three-time winner Tiger Woods struggled with his putting and closed on two-over, choosing not to putt on the 11th, where he will resume tomorrow.

Rory McIlroy putted a bogey on the 11th and ended the day even.
