Interview: Kelly Simm

Sports Mole speaks with Team GB artistic gymnast Kelly Simm after her performance at the European Games in Baku.

Kelly Simm and her fellow Team GB artistic gymnasts teammates have been in action at the European Games in Baku over the past two days, competing across a number of different events.

The 20-year-old, who won team gold with England at the Commonwealth Games, is expected to qualify for the all-around final after finishing as Britain's best-placed women's gymnast, while individual glory also remains a possibility.

However, a mixed performance in the team event has left Team GB with only a slim chance of making it onto the podium later today.

Here, Sports Mole catches up with Simm to get her take on the past couple of days of action and the experience of competing in Azerbaijan.

How has it gone for you and the team over the past two days?

"Individually there were definitely some good bits. Some bits didn't quite go to plan. I was disappointed with the bars yesterday because of the connections and things, but overall it was a good learning experience and I'm really happy.

"I'm really proud (of my teammates). We're so close, like sisters. We get along so well. I'm really proud of how they've done. We weren't expecting much; just to go out and get the experience which was amazing."

How were you feeling this morning? Are nerves still a factor for you even though you have plenty of experience?

"No, I definitely still get nervous! That's something I'm trying to work on, controlling nerves because I feel it a lot but I think that's just because we all want to do well and we all work so hard."

What about the level of competition here? Is it what you were expecting, is it more intense?

"I didn't know what to expect, especially because of the format which is really different. I've seen the scores of the Russians which were amazing, so it's been a good level of competition."

How has the whole Baku experience been for you so far?

"It's been amazing. [The athletes village] is like a different world when you're out there. It's a great atmosphere and everyone is really supportive of each other, especially Team GB."

What's the plan now? Is it back to training or just chilling out?

"I'm not quite sure. We might have another training (session) today or we might just watch and see if we've made any finals, but we'll keep training throughout the week."
