The defending champions left it late in their quarter-final against Latvia, needing a goal from Shea Weber inside the final seven minutes to secure their place in the last four.

Meanwhile, the Americans cruised past the Czech Republic with goals from James van Riemsdyk, Dustin Brown, David Backes, Zach Parise and Phil Kessel in the 5-2 victory.

Sweden and Finland will contest the other semi-final for a place in the gold medal game.
