Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski believes that Thomas Hitzlsperger's decision to come out as gay is an "important" step forward.
The 31-year-old has become only the fourth footballer to be openly gay after claiming in a German interview that it is a "good time" for him to make his sexuality public.
Fellow German Podolski wrote on Twitter: "Brave and right decision. Respect, Thomas Hitzlsperger. His outing is an important sign in our time."
Hitzlsperger played for Aston Villa, West Ham United and Everton during his career.
