Egyptian judoka sent home from Rio 2016 for 'handshake snub'

Islam El Shehaby is condemned by the Egyptian Olympic Committee and sent home for seemingly refusing to offer his hand to Israeli rival Or Sasson.

Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby will play no further part at the 2016 Olympic Games after apparently refusing to shake the hand of opponent Or Sasson.

The 34-year-old seemingly refused to offer his hand due to the nationality of his Israeli rival, which the International Olympics Committee (IOC) was quick to act upon.

In a statement released on Monday evening, the IOC claimed that El Shehaby's conduct was "against the spirit of friendship embodied in the Olympic values".

El Shehaby, under pressure from some quarters of his homeland to pull out of the bout with Sasson, was booed by the crowd and has now been sent home by the Egyptian Olympic Committee.

France's Teddy Riner went on to win the men's over 100kg event, beating Kunathip Yea-On of Thailand in the final.
