Sir Bobby Charlton hosts Hillsborough families at Old Trafford

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton welcomed the Hillsborough families to Old Trafford for their fierce clash against Liverpool on Sunday.

The United ambassador met Margaret Aspinall, who lost her 18-year-old son James during the 1989 tragedy, which resulted in 96 Liverpool fans losing their lives in a stadium crush.

Charlton welcomed Aspinall and fellow campaigner Jenny Hicks to the directors' box at Old Trafford to witness Liverpool lose 2-1 to the Red Devils.

"We both had a lovely day in Manchester," Aspinall told the Manchester Evening News. "Sir Bobby and Norma were absolutely brilliant and we were treated with nothing but respect by Manchester United.

"I have never been to Old Trafford before. I might get into trouble for saying this but I thought it was a fantastic stadium and I learned a lot about the club's history."

Documents were released last year revealing that the South Yorkshire Police had altered police statements in order to avoid exposing their incompetence during the tragedy 23 years ago.
