The BBC has apologised on behalf of John Inverdale after he made an inadvertent x-rated comment live on air today.

The broadcaster, while talking about the Cheltenham Festival on BBC Radio 5 live, referred to "rose-c***ed" glasses instead of rose-tinted glasses.

A BBC spokesperson has since said: "It was a slip of the tongue and John apologised immediately afterwards."

It is not the first time that presenter Inverdale has been forced to apologise for making inappropriate comments.

In 2013 he caused concern when he said tennis player Marion Bartoli was "never going to be a looker" live on air before her appearance in the Wimbledon women's singles final.
