Clarke Carlisle charged with drink-driving days before road accident

Retired footballer Clarke Carlisle was charged with drink-driving just days before he suffered serious injuries after getting hit by a lorry.

Former footballer Clarke Carlisle was charged with drink-driving just days before he suffered serious injuries in a road accident.

The 35-year-old, who is the former chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association, was hit by a lorry on the A64 near York last Monday.

According to BBC News, the Metropolitan Police have revealed that Carlisle was charged for failing to provide a sample on December 20.

The retired sportsman, who remains in hospital in Leeds, is due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on January 20.

Carlisle's wife Gemma gave an update on her husband's condition by writing on Twitter: "Clarke still very poorly but we're hopeful he'll make a full recovery."

Carlisle played for a number of clubs, including Burnley, Queens Park Rangers and Leeds United, during his career.
