Clarke Carlisle "deeply ashamed" after trying to take his own life

Former Premier League footballer Clarke Carlisle admits that he feels "deeply ashamed" and "guilty" about the "trauma" that he has caused following his suicide attempt.

Former Premier League footballer Clarke Carlisle has admitted that he feels "ashamed" and "guilty" after trying to take his own life by jumping in front of a lorry last year.

The ex-Burnley defender spent six weeks in hospital after his suicide attempt on the A64 in Yorkshire in December.

In an interview with the June edition of GQ Magazine, Carlisle revealed that he is still struggling to get in contact with the lorry driver involved in the incident so that he can apologise.

"I feel deeply ashamed and incredibly guilty - that I may have caused lasting trauma to my family but also, what about the driver?" Carlisle said in the interview.

"I have tried to make contact and he has point-blank refused and I understand that. He has to deal with it as he sees fit, but I wish I could see him and apologise."

Carlisle has been battling depression for many years.
