Court hears Oscar Pistorius appeal, prosecutors argue for murder conviction

Prosecutors begin their appeal against Oscar Pistorius's culpable homicide conviction in a bid to get him convicted of murder following the death of Reeva Steenkamp.

Prosecutors have begun their appeal against Oscar Pistorius's culpable homicide conviction at the Supreme court in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

The six-time Paralympic champion was jailed for five years for shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013.

The double amputee was cleared of murder, but found guilty of the lesser charge of culpable homicide (manslaughter) after he claimed that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four gunshots through a toilet door in his home in Pretoria.

State lawyers believe that Pistorius should be convicted of murder and began outlining their case to the court on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old was released from Kgosi Mumpuru II prison a fortnight ago and transferred to house arrest at his uncle's luxury property.

Pistorius served just short of one year behind bars.
