Fans petition ITV to remove Paloma Faith's Rugby World Cup song

Fans petition ITV to replace the Rugby World Cup theme song World In Union sung by Paloma Faith.

Rugby fans have petitioned ITV to replace the World Cup theme music sung by Paloma Faith.

'World In Union' has been sung by a different singer every tournament but Faith's interpretation has been met with disdain in some quarters.

The campaign called "Petition to remove Paloma Faith from the Rugby World Cup" was set up by someone calling themselves No Paloma shortly after the song debuted during the coverage of England's opener against Fiji.

A letter to ITV Sport that accompanies the petition says: "We, the undersigned, request that you, ITV, remove Paloma Faith from the Rugby World Cup in order to make it a more enjoyable experience for all spectators."

'World In Union', written by Charlie Skarbek, was commissioned by World Rugby in 1991 and has been used as the tournament's anthem ever since. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was the first to record it, and others to sing it have included Dame Shirley Bassey and Bryn Terfel.

It was performed live at this year's opening ceremony by the soprano Laura Wright.
