International Olympic Committee member: 'Sochi lacking enthusiasm'

International Olympic Committee member Gerhard Heiberg admits that the Sochi Games are lacking enthusiasm.

An International Olympic Committee member has admitted that the Winter Olympics 'lack enthusiasm and atmosphere'.

The Games have come under criticism with certain stadiums half-full and a dearth of atmosphere created by lack of spectators.

Gerhard Heiberg, a Norwegian who heads the IOC's marketing commission, believes that the competitions have so far been fine, but concedes that Sochi 2014 needs improving elsewhere.

"We feared that a little bit," Heiberg is quoted as saying by North Jersey when asked what he thought about the lack of atmosphere.

"We were warned about this. The TV pictures are wonderful, the competitions are wonderful, the venues are great.

"I feel a bit the lack of enthusiasm and the joy of sports. There are not enough people. You have seen the stadiums are not filled."

Day three of the Winter Olympics ended with Canada continuing their dominance in the freestyle skiing events.
