Betting on the Turnbull Stakes: tips from an expert horse racing bettor

As inducements aren’t allowed in Australia, no offers to new customers can be advertised. If you are a member, then Turnbull Stakes betting offers can be forthcoming from your bookmaker. Check the promotions page once you’ve logged in, or they may well be emailed to you if you've added this as a preference.

It’s not all about grabbing special Turnbull Stakes offers anyway. The key is understanding how to bet on one of Flemington’s biggest races.

Understand the race conditions

When we say conditions, that means several things. One Group 1 race over 2000 metres is different from another, for various reasons. Keep in mind the following:

  • The Track. In this case, Flemington Racecourse. This is a left-handed track, so avoid horses that seem to show their best form around a right-handed venue. Read up on Flemington’s quirks and understand what type of horse tends to win there as being close to the pace can also be a factor.
  • Distance. As mentioned, this is a 2000m race. Horses can and do step up and down in trip successfully, but a sprinter won’t be winning this race and neither will a confirmed stayer such as those winning regularly over 3000 metres-plus.
  • Ground conditions. Before the Turnbull Stakes 2024, keep an eye on the weather. Not every horse handles all conditions. If it’s wet and the ground turns soft or heavy, that vastly disadvantages those with a choppy action and who prefer fast ground.
  • Weights. This race is a weight-for-age event. That means that, regardless of their rating, horses aren’t handicapped. The only reason weight is taken off is if the horse is a filly/mare.

These things are all important. Horses tend to be aimed at various Group 1 events looking for glory, and of course the huge prize money.

That doesn’t mean all such races suit them. A hold-up horse which likes 1400 metres is vastly different from a front-runner which can dominate over 2000 metres.

Follow the form

Understanding the race conditions is a start, but to make the most of any Turnbull Stakes offers you should be able to know who the best horses are.

The odds are a start, and we have more info on that below. But not every favourite wins, they can’t be taken as a totally accurate guide. Keep the below in mind:

  • Check ratings. Each horse has a rating but remember that they aren’t stagnant. If you see a progression, an upward trajectory in a horse’s ratings then it could be that they’re improving. Factor that in when attempting to second guess what level each horse will run to.
  • Check for distance bias. Using those ratings, or simply win and placed efforts if you wish, look to see what distance a horse tends to run its best at. If there is a strong favourite but it has done all its best work over 1600 metres, it may well be that the extra 400m in the Turnbull Stakes 2024 won’t be to its liking.
  • Check ground conditions. It should be obvious, but some punters forget this. Many horses show their best on fast ground, but when it gets heavy only certain types can get through it. Look through each horse’s profile for the pattern.
  • Cross-reference the form lines. If Horse A beats Horse B fair and square at level weights by 2 lengths, then Horse C beats horse B fairly by 3½ lengths it is fair to basically assume that Horse C can beat Horse A. Not all odds will reflect this.

These, and many other techniques, are used regularly by handicappers and punters all the time. You can also check times, but they change radically from course to course and depending strongly on underfoot conditions and pace.

Check the Turnbull odds across multiple bookies, and regularly

As part of betting the Turnbull Stakes, always check the odds. Make sure you shop around to get the best value.

Turnbull Stakes betting offers can and will change from bookie to bookie. Why would you accept $4.50 for a horse when $5.00 is available elsewhere?

Turnbull Stakes Ladbrokes betting is likely to be different from the Turnbull Stakes bet365 odds. Hunt for the best price in order to get maximum value for your bet.

About the Turnbull Stakes

Flemington, home of the Melbourne Cup in Victoria, also hosts the Turnbull Stakes.

The race is run over 2000 metres and is a Group 1 event for those aged four and over. Run left-handed, the Turnbull is one of the major middle-distance weight-for-age races in Australia.

First run in 1948, the Turnbull has been run under various conditions and under several names. Initially a handicap, it has recently been staged as a weight-for-age race and is similar in its makeup to the Cox Plate.

The total purse for the Turnbull Stakes is $750,000. The race is run as part of the Cox Plate bonus scheme. Any horse winning this race is eligible for a $1 million bonus should they also go on to win the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in October.

Turnbull Stakes Day

Historically, Turnbull Day is a great pre-curser to the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Many of the horses running on this day will be aimed at the Carnival later in the spring.

Over $3 million in prize money is on offer across 10 races on the day. While the Turnbull Stakes is the feature race, a ballot exemption, or golden ticket for the Melbourne Cup is offered up for the winner of the Bart Cummings Stakes (Group 3) on the same card.

Elsewhere on the race schedule, the Group 2 Danehill Stakes, the Edward Manifold Stakes and the Gilgai Stakes at the same level are also staged.

Those little differences can count for a lot. The Turnbull Stakes Ladbrokes odds on offer for $3.20 for the favourite will be the same as Neds, as they are owned by the same firm.

Conversely, the Turnbull Stakes Picklebet odds are not offered in advance. bet365 is best priced on two of the first three in the market and that’s not a great surprise.

bet365 is a firm that has often handed out better horse racing odds on major races, but the advice is repeated again. Always shop around.
