Kauto Star is likely to be fit for the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday after reacting well to galloping yesterday, according to trainer Paul Nicholls.

The two-time Gold Cup winner had been rated as '50-50' for the festival showpiece after a fall in training last week.

However, following his run-out at Wincanton on Friday, Nicholls is optimistic that the 12-year-old will be fit to race.

"We're very happy. It was just what we wanted. He went nicely and was full of enthusiasm," he told Channel 4's The Morning Line.

"The signs are all good - he came out of that yesterday and he appears to be back to 100% normal now.

"He came back last night and was straight into his grub. He ate up this morning and there's not a bother on him. We're really, really pleased. He's 100% sound this morning so we're very happy."

Kauto Star is best-priced 4/1 second favourite for a third Cheltenham crown, behind last year's winner Long Run who is at 7/4.
