Great Britain raced into an early lead, with Australia and USA trailing behind in second and third.

The race soon developed into a straight competition between Great Britain and Australia.

With 500m left, Great Britain led by a quarter of a length and looked likely to finish in first place.

Australia pushed all the way, but Great Britain held on to secure the gold medal with a time of 6:03.97.
