St Helens thrash Widnes Vikings to close on Leeds Rhinos

St Helens thrash Widnes Vikings to move four points adrift of Super League leaders Leeds Rhinos.

St Helens grabbed six tries in thumping Widnes Vikings 34-16 at Langtree Park in the Super League tonight.

Both sides went into the break at 12-12 with two converted tries apiece, courtesy of Luke Walsh and Travis Burns for the hosts, while Kevin Brown and Joe Mellor touched down for Vikings.

Saints boasted a two-point lead on the hour mark when Matt Whitley cancelled out Alex Walmsley's converted effort on 53 minutes, but Jack Owens missed the conversion for Widnes.

It was an error that the hosts seized upon swiftly, as Matty Fleming, Tommy Makinson and Mark Percival all ran in tries in the final 14 minutes to seal the win.

In consequence of the win, Helens move four points behind Super League leaders Leeds Rhinos.
