Wakefield Trinity Wildcats salvage dramatic late victory at Castleford Tigers

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats salvage a victory from the jaws of defeat courtesy of three tries in the final 15 minutes against Castleford Tigers.

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have battled back from behind to kick off their Super League season with an impressive 24-22 victory over Castleford Tigers at Wheldon Road.

The hosts made a strong start to the contest thanks to two early tries from Denny Solomona on his full Cas debut, the second of which came after a fine piece of team play between Junior Moors and early replacement Jake Webster to link up with the winger, who did the rest.

Paul McShane did manage to pull back some points when he found the whitewash on 26 minutes, but Luke Gale ensured that it was Castleford who went into the break with a hefty lead after selling the opposition a dummy and adding a debut try of his own.

It looked to be a straightforward victory for the Tigers when Justin Carney added try number four of the evening midway through the second half, but that sparked a revival from the Wildcats on a day of comebacks and high drama in the Super League.

Pita Godinet kicked things off by touching down on 65 minutes, and when Ali Lauitiiti added his name to the scoresheet it meant that there were just four points separating the teams heading into the dying stages.

Danny Washbrook proved to be the Tigers' hero, diving in under posts and paving the way for Craig Hall to add the extras for a fourth time in the game to salvage the slenderest of wins.
