Warrington Wolves thump St Helens to end Magic Weekend

St Helens miss the chance to leapfrog Leeds Rhinos at the Super League summit after losing their Magic Weekend derby 41-24 to Warrington Wolves.

St Helens missed the chance to leapfrog Leeds Rhinos at the summit of the Super League after losing their Magic Weekend derby 41-24 to Warrington Wolves.

The Etihad Stadium played host as Rhys Evans touched down twice in helping the Wolves boast an 18-6 half-time lead, with Gene Ormsby and Chris Hill also crossing for Warrington.

A second-half blitz saw Warrington open up a commanding 30-point lead, as Ryan Atkins, Joel Monaghan and Matthew Russell all added converted tries to the scoreline.

The Saints soon rallied and reduced the gap to 12 points courtesy of tries from Jordan Turner, Lance Hohaia and Matty Dawson, but Monaghan crossed once more to kill off any hopes of comeback.
