Wigan Warriors win record 19th Challenge Cup

Wigan Warriors win the Challenge Cup for a record 19th time after beating Hull FC 16-0 at Wembley.

Wigan Warriors have won the Challenge Cup for a record 19th time after beating Hull FC 16-0 at Wembley.

The result means that, for the first year ever, the winners of the Challenge Cup and football's FA Cup hail from the same town.

It also sees Hull's awful record at Wembley continue. The Black and Whites have now lost on each of their eight visits to the national stadium - a run which stretches back to 1959.

Iain Thornley's first-half try put Wigan ahead, before a conversion and a penalty from Pat Richards left the Humberside outfit needing two scores.

Jamie Shaul threatened to break away and touch down for Hull 10 minutes after half-time, but Josh Charnley powered back to execute a superb try-saving tackle.

Richards then added another two points to his side's total on the hour, but Hull refused to surrender and continued to apply genuine pressure inside Wigan territory.

However, a combination of basic Hull errors and resolute Wigan defending managed to prevent a comeback.

Sam Tomkins added gloss to Wigan's win in the dying seconds, as he charged over the whitewash right between the posts.

That left Richards with a simple conversation, which took his personal haul in this season's competition to 100 points.
