Eddie Jones confirms his resignation as Australia head coach after just nine games in charge of the Wallabies during a disastrous second spell.

Eddie Jones has confirmed his resignation as Australia head coach in the wake of the Wallabies' disappointing Rugby World Cup campaign.

The 63-year-old - who previously led the Wallabies to the 2003 World Cup final during a four-year spell between 2001 and 2005 - returned to Australia in January following his England sacking.

Jones agreed to a long-term contract as Dave Rennie's successor, but Australia failed to make it to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time ever this year, winning two and losing two of their Pool C games to finish third in the section.

In between wins over Georgia and Portugal, Australia were edged out by Fiji and embarrassed 40-6 by Wales, which was their eighth-heaviest defeat of all time, and Jones confirmed to The Australian that he was ceding control of the reins.

"I feel disappointed about the World Cup. I feel disappointment about the fact that what we wanted to do in terms of changing the system hasn't been able to happen in the short term. In the short and medium term, it really affects me personally," said Jones, who also affirmed that he had "no regrets" over the work he did.

"I have a major feeling of disappointment. But I don't feel any grievance towards anyone. I've really enjoyed coaching the players. The players have been fantastic. They just need a better environment to be training and playing in."

Jones leaves the Wallabies for the second time with a meagre record of two wins and seven defeats from just nine games at the helm, but Rugby Australia have not yet confirmed Jones's exit.
