Sale Sharks overcome Gloucester Rugby

Sale Sharks start their Aviva Premiership campaign with a narrow 22-16 win over Gloucester Rugby at Kingsholm Stadium.

Sale Sharks have opened their Aviva Premiership campaign with a narrow 22-16 victory over Gloucester Rugby at Kingsholm Stadium.

Nick Macleod kicked the visitors into an early lead before Mark Cueto touched down to extend their advantage on 11 minutes.

A Freddie Burns penalty got Gloucester off the mark soon after, but Tom Arscott kicked over twice to put Sale 14-3 in front at the break.

It took the away side 10 minutes into the second half to push further ahead as Andy Forsyth's try was given after some deliberation from the officials.

Henry Trinder then went over for the home side with an hour played before Burns converted to give Gloucester hope.

Two quick penalties from Burns turned it into a three-point match with 13 minutes left on the clock, but Sale clinched the points late on thanks to Joe Ford's drop goal.
