South Africa fly-half Pat Lambie: 'We have to take a good look at ourselves'

South Africa fly-half Pat Lambie has admitted that he and his teammates have to "take a good look" at themselves after they were astonishingly beaten by Japan in their Rugby World Cup opener in Brighton.

Two-time champions South Africa had never lost their opening match at a World Cup until today, when Japan recorded just their second-ever World Cup win with a last-gasp 34-32 triumph at The Amex Stadium.

"All that we can do is look to our game against Samoa next weekend and we have to make things right," Lambie told Sports Mole.

"We'll have to look at the video closely during the week, take a good look at ourselves and make sure that our preparation for Samoa is the best that it can be."

Lambie, 24, said that South Africa's next Pool B match against Samoa at Villa Park was now all that they are focused on.

"We all want to make things right now and we have to; we have no choice," he added. "It's the biggest game of the tournament for us now."

Asked if what is being described as the greatest World Cup upset ever could spur the Springboks on to victory in this tournament, Lambie replied: "Let's hope so. Let's hope so."

The 34 points conceded by South Africa is the most that they have ever given up in a World Cup match.
