Five British swimmers up for Athlete of the Year award

Five swimmers including Fran Halsall and Ross Murdoch are nominated for British Swimming's Athlete of the Year award.

Five swimmers have been nominated for British Swimming's Athlete of the Year award following their achievements this season.

Fran Halsall, Adam Peaty, Ross Murdoch, Siobhan Marie O'Connor and Jazz Carlin have been put forward for the accolade after impressive showings at the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships.

Britain topped the medal table at the Europeans in Berlin for the first time ever after clinching 11 gold medals and two world records.

National performance director Chris Spice said: "This year has seen a number of fantastic performances from the swimming squads not only at the key benchmark meets of the year for both seniors and juniors but also at our domestic competitions as well.

"We won 15 gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and 11 at the European Championships and topped the medal table but within these excellent team performances were stand-out individuals."

The winner will be announced on December 16.
