GB's Adam Peaty smashes 50m breaststroke world record

Great Britain's Adam Peaty sets a new world record of 26.42s in the 50m breaststroke semi-finals at the World Championships in Kazan.

Four-time European champion Adam Peaty set a new world record in the 50m breaststroke semi-finals at the World Championships in Kazan today.

South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh broke his own world record in this event in the heats this morning, but Peaty responded in emphatic fashion in the semi-finals.

The 20-year-old drove through the first 25m and stormed into the lead to touch the wall in 26.42s, while Van der Burgh was unable to match or better it by winning his semi-final in 26.74s.

Peaty, who is competing in his first World Championships, won gold in the 100m breaststroke final on Monday.
