GB's Ellie Simmonds misses out on gold in IPC World Championships in Glasgow

Great Britain's Ellie Simmonds is forced to settle for silver in the S6 400m freestyle final on the opening day of the IPC World Swimming Championships in Glasgow.

Great Britain's Ellie Simmonds failed to claim gold on day one of the IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow.

The four-time Paralympic champion was forced to settle for silver after being beaten by Ukraine's Yelyzaveta Mereshko in the S6 400m freestyle final on Monday.

"It was such a tough race," Simmonds, who had won every major title in that specific race since Beijing 2008, told BBC Sport. "I gave it the best I could, it just wasn't good enough to win, but it is all about next year and Rio [Paralympics]."

Overall, Britain claimed six medals on the opening day, with Andrew Mullen setting a new European record in the heats of the S5 50m breaststroke, but he finished second to Brazil's Daniel Dias in the final.
