Germany win bronze in men's team table tennis

Germany win bronze in the men's team table tennis competition, beating Hong Kong 3-1.

Germany have won the bronze-medal match 3-1 against Hong Kong in the men's team table tennis.

In the first of the five scheduled matches Timo Boll made light work of Leung Chu Yan, taking just 17 minutes to beat him 3-0.

The second match between Dmitrij Ovtcharov and Tang Peng was a much closer affair. Each man edged out his opponent 13-11 in the opening two sets before the German took the next two 11-9 to wrap up the 3-1 win.

It left Hong Kong needing to win all three of the remaining matches to take bronze.

Ovtcharov and Bastian Steger paired up against Leung and Jiang Tianyi and the first set went in favour of the Hong Kong duo 12-10. Hong Kong comfortably wrapped up the second and third sets and Germany's lead was cut to 2-1.

Boll then faced Jiang in a singles match. The first set just edged in favour of the Hong Kong player, but the German fought back to take the next 11-5.

Boll took the third set to lead 2-1 and to leave himself just one set away from winning gold for Germany. Jiang saved one match point at 10-8 but Boll took it 11-9 to give Germany the 3-1 win.
