Jelena Jankovic ousted by Timea Bacsinszky

Jelena Jankovic suffers a surprising defeat to Timea Bacsinszky in the Australian Open first round in Melbourne.

Jelena Jankovic has bowed out of the Australian Open at the first hurdle after losing to Timea Bacsinszky.

The 15th seed struggled on serve throughout the Court 13 match to allow her Swiss opponent to wrap up a 6-1 6-4 victory.

The accuracy of Bacsinszky's first serve provided Jankovic with a number of problems during the first set, but it was the world number 41's return that proved pivotal as she broke three times on the way to the first set.

In the second, the 2008 semi-finalist won just five receiving points and that allowed Bacsinszky the freedom to attack the Jankovic serve without any pressure, and a single break was enough for the 25-year-old to come through in one hour 18 minutes.

Bacsinszky will now play either Kimiko Date-Krumm or Anna Tatishvili in the last 64.
