Andy Murray's winning streak ended by Marin Cilic in Cincinnati

Andy Murray's career-best run of form is ended by Marin Cilic in the Cincinnati Open final.

Andy Murray's 22-match winning streak has been ended by Marin Cilic in the final of the Cincinnati Open.

The British number one had tasted a career-best run of success to claim both the Wimbledon and Olympic Games crowns in recent weeks, but his impressive form was ended in a 6-4 7-5 defeat in the United States.

A week on from retaining his Olympic title with victory against Juan Martin del Potro in Rio de Janeiro, Murray came unstuck in a time of one hour and 34 minutes as he was denied a third title in Cincinnati.

It is a maiden triumph in the competition for Cilic, meanwhile, who lifted his first trophy since going all the way in the 2014 US Open.

Cilic broke his opponent twice in the first set to grab an early foothold on the contest, eventually taking the opener with relative ease despite Murray breaking back in the eighth game.

The second set proved to be a tighter affair, although Murray lost the only break of serve in the 11th game after initially saving four break points, gifting Cilic the chance to serve out the match and claim victory.
