The American, who has never won the trophy, managed to seal a 7-6(5) 1-6 6-0 victory to follow her sister Serena Williams into the next phase of the Grand Slam.

Williams lost serve in the first set, but she immediately broke back to force a tie-break, which the 35-year-old managed to grab 7-5.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion suffered a wobble in the second set as Cornet earned a double break to restrict Williams to just one game.

It was a complete turnaround in the third set, though, as Williams ripped through it in 27 minutes to win six straight games.
