Maria Sharapova hammers Julia Goerges to progress at Indian Wells

Maria Sharapova eases past Julia Goerges 6-1 6-4 in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

Maria Sharapova has progressed to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells with a 6-1 6-4 victory over Julia Goerges.

The defending champion took just 66 minutes to defeat her German opponent in their second-round match on Saturday.

The world number five scored 16 winners and converted four of the eight break points in the contest.

Sharapova will take on Camila Giorgi for a place in the fourth round of the tournament.
