Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka is knocked out of the Indian Wells Masters by Kevin Anderson.

Stanislas Wawrinka has crashed out of the Indian Wells Masters at the fourth-round stage, succumbing to a 7-6(1) 4-6 6-1 defeat to Kevin Anderson.

The Australian Open champion lost serve four times against the South African, but forced a tie-break in the first set before going on to edge the second.

Wawrinka lost the opening game of the decider and was broken to love in the fifth, handing a 150th career victory to his 17th-seeded opponent.

Anderson will face either Roger Federer or Tommy Haas in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
