Petra Kvitova too strong for Johanna Konta in Wuhan

British number one Johanna Konta is out of the Wuhan Open after losing at the quarter-final stage to Petra Kvitova.

Johanna Konta has been defeated by Petra Kvitova at the quarter-final stage of the Wuhan Open.

The British number one had been hoping to boost her chances of reaching the end-of-season finals in Singapore but despite competing well with the two-time Wimbledon champion, she was ultimately overpowered by the left-hander.

Konta had two opportunities to reclaim the break that Kvitova had secured midway through the opening set but after they went begging, her Czech opponent was able to seize the initiative in what was a tight contest.

However, Kvitova remained in control for much of the match and another break of serve in the second was eventually enough to claim a 6-3 6-4 win.

Kvitova will now face Simona Halep for a place in Saturday's final.
