In the opener there were nine games of serve held before Simon faltered at 5-4 down to gift Murray the advantage.
The Scot then broke at the first opportunity in the second set and went on to claim victory with another break, winning through in just over an hour and a half.
Murray's last-eight opponent will be the winner of the match later today between eighth and ninth seeds Tomas Berdych and David Ferrer.
