Fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki has been dumped out of the Rogers Cup in the second round courtesy of a straight-sets defeat to Belinda Bencic.
The 18-year-old moved up to a career-high ranking of 20th earlier this week, and she quickly set about proving herself by breaking Wozniacki at just the second time of asking.
The Dane fought back, however, breaking the youngster at the next two opportunities to regain control, but she failed to close it out when serving for the set as Bencic came storming back.
Indeed, the Swiss starlet broke her opponent twice in succession to swing the match back in her favour, before serving out to take the opener 7-5.
It was Wozniacki who gained the early initiative in the second set by moving into a 3-1 lead, but once again Bencic refused to lie down and broke back immediately after her more experienced opponent had gained the advantage.
Bencic would not give up another break point for the rest of the match, while forcing three off Wozniacki's serve, one of which she took before seeing out the set for a 7-5 7-5 triumph.
Bencic will now face Sabine Lisicki in the third round in Toronto.
