Serbian 11th-seed Ana Ivanovic has advanced to the second round of the women's singles by ousting American Christina McHale on Court 18 at Wimbledon.
The former French Open champion took a nip-and-tuck opener 6-4, where both women lost their serve on multiple occasions before Serbian Ivanovic held in the tenth game to take the set.
Ivanovic lost her serve again in the first game of the second, with McHale this time holding on to take an early two-game advantage in the set.
The topsy-turvy nature of the affair continued though, as McHale was broken in her next two service games with Ivanovic reeling off four games in a row.
The Serbian had the chance to serve out the match at 5-3 but couldn't take it as McHale broke back yet again. Serving at 5-6, McHale was taken to deuce by the 11th seed and this time the match was finished as Ivanovic broke through.
The 24-year-old will next face Great Britain's Elena Baltacha at SW19.
