Dominic Thiem recovers to overcome Pablo Carreno Busta at US Open

Dominic Thiem celebrates his 23rd birthday with victory over Pablo Carreno-Busta in the third round of the US Open, recovering from a slow start to prevail in four sets.

Dominic Thiem will contest in the last 16 of the US Open for a second time in his career thanks to victory over Pablo Carreno Busta in four sets.

The eighth seed had to recover from a set down at Flushing Meadows, having got off to a horror start on his 23rd birthday when losing each of the first five games.

Thiem battled back well, however, earning a 1-6 6-4 6-4 7-5 victory to set up a meeting with either Juan Martin del Potro or David Ferrer for a place in the quarter-finals.

After heavily losing the first set, Thiem broke his opponent twice in the second to eventually level things up in New York with his third set point.

A mammoth sixth game in the third set may well have acted as the pivotal moment in the match, as the Austrian just about edged out his opponent and pushed on from that point to take the only break of serve which arrived in the final game.

The fourth set again proved to be a drawn-out affair, but it was Thiem who did what was required after a slow start to the contest to gain a foothold and get over the line in a match lasting around three hours.
