It was the perfect start for Querrey as he nabbed a break of serve at the first time of asking, which was enough for him to push on and take a one-set lead over the Frenchman.
It was a tight affair in the second set, as both players struggled to find that vital break, which resulted in the set moving into a tie-break.
Tsonga was able to edge it and draw level on sets, but two breaks in the second tie-break of the contest ensured that the third set went into Querrey's hands.
The Frenchman battled to save a break point in the opening match of the fourth set before going on to earn a break point, which was enough to draw the contest level on 2-2.
The fifth set was yet another close contest, but the pair were interrupted and forced to resume play on Thursday at the All England Club.
Despite the overnight break, both players continued to hold their serves well, but Tsonga eventually came out on top by winning the decider 14-12 to reach the next round.
