Vicky Holland edges out Great Britain teammate Non Stanford in a sprint finish to earn a bronze medal in the women's triathlon at the Rio Olympic Games.

Vicky Holland has earned a bronze medal in the women's triathlon at the Rio Olympic Games after edging out Great Britain teammate Non Stanford in a sprint finish.

Gwen Jorgensen of the United States clinched gold in a time of 1:56:16, with Switzerland's Nicola Spirig finishing 40 seconds later to take the silver medal.

Welsh triathlete Stanford, the 2013 world champion, was overtaken by her housemate and training partner Holland in the charge for the line and lost out by three seconds.

The third Briton, Helen Jenkins, came 19th, with the Republic of Ireland's Aileen Reed in 21st place.
