Team GB coach: 'Elise Christie did nothing wrong'

Great Britain short track speed skating coach Nicky Gooch says Elise Christie did "nothing wrong" after the 23-year-old was disqualified from her 1500m heat.

Great Britain short track speed skating coach Nicky Gooch has said that Elise Christie did "nothing wrong" after the 23-year-old was disqualified from her 1500m heat at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Christie thought that she had progressed after finishing in second place, but she crossed inside the line of the track at the end of the race and the judge disqualified her.

"The referee said Elise didn't cross the line. Where the finish line crosses the track, she crossed inside that line," Gooch told reporters after the race. "The judge ruled she was off track and that means officially she hasn't finished the race.

"The top three qualified, she'd done nothing wrong. She tried to win the race because there is a benefit to that and the referee has called it off track.

"I was really shocked. I've looked at the video and we're talking centimetres here. To the letter of the law it's probably right but she's clearly qualified through that race but the rules say you can't be inside the line."

Christie's teammate Charlotte Gilmartin finished fifth in her heat.
