Vladimir Putin: 'Rivals tried to hijack Olympic bid'

Russian President Vladimir Putin claims that a rival nation attempted to derail their winning Sochi Winter Olympics bid through a late dirty tricks campaign.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has said that a rival nation attempted to derail their winning Sochi Winter Olympics bid through a late dirty tricks campaign.

In a documentary aired on state television channel Rossiya 1 on Friday, Putin said Sochi 2014 promotion leaflets were placed under doors of hotel rooms that housed International Olympic Committee members on the night before the final vote in 2007.

Campaigning is strictly forbidden in the run up to the vote under IOC rules.

Putin said: "Do you know what saved us? CCTV cameras in hallways recorded that it was done by our rivals posing as us. It didn't help them."

Putin stopped short of naming the country in question.
