Jack Laugher, Chris Mears defend Commonwealth title

Jack Laugher and Chris Mears defend their title in the men's 3m synchro at the Commonwealth Games.

Jack Laugher and Chris Mears have comfortably defended their title in the men's 3m synchro event at the Commonwealth Games.

The pair took top honours in Glasgow four years ago shortly after they began competing together and have since gone on to win gold together at the Rio Olympics.

In truth there was little in the way of competition for the duo tonight, with their higher-tariff dive list effectively making them a shoo-in for the gold barring any serious mishaps.

Their total score of 436.17 was more than 20 points clear of the competition and included a stunning 92.43 for their penultimate jump, the forward 2-1/2 with 3 twists.

Experienced Canadian duo Philippe Gagne and Francois Imbeau-Dulac took home the silver, their final total of 415.23 including a top score of 81.90 for their reverse 3-1/2.

Bronze went the way of Australia as Domonic Bedggood and Matthew Carter notched up a decent tally of 408.12.

England had one other pairing in the event, brothers Ross Haslam and Jack Haslam, who finished in fifth on a score of 395.31.
