Danny Welbeck: 'I embrace competition'

Forward Danny Welbeck says that he 'embraces competition' for places, having fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal during the current campaign.

Forward Danny Welbeck has suggested that he has no issues with continuing to fight for a place in the Arsenal starting lineup.

During the current campaign, Welbeck has either found himself behind Alexandre Lacazette or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with just eight starts being made in the Premier League.

Some of Welbeck's performances have also been criticised by the club's supporters, but the England international has said that he is "motivated" to prove himself to manager Arsene Wenger.

The 27-year-old told the club's matchday programme: "It's competition and I embrace it. Ever since I was a young kid, I've been playing for an academy with scouts all over the world that are looking for top players to come in.

"You have competition throughout your whole life and it only makes you better. That competitive edge gives you extra motivation."

In total, Welbeck has contributed five goals in 16 starts and 13 substitute outings this season.
