Preview: Freiburg vs. Bayern Munich - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews the Bundesliga clash between Freiburg and Bayern Munich, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Bayern Munich will be looking to follow on from their emphatic 6-1 demolition of Werder Bremen last time out as they look to get their Bundesliga title challenge back on track.

The reigning champions visit Freiburg next, who are just one place and two points behind fifth-placed Bayern in the table.

Freiburg made a strong start to their Bundesliga campaign, winning five of their first nine league games to find themselves in the midst of an unlikely title race.

However, they have dropped off in recent weeks, winning just two of their last six domestic encounters to fall eight points behind league leaders RB Leipzig, though they are just three points off the top four.

Freiburg are not particularly prolific in attack compared to some of their Bundesliga counterparts, with their tally of 24 strikes from 15 games some way behind the likes of Leipzig and Bayern, with 42 and 41 respectively.

At the back, however, their impressive record of just 18 goals conceded is bettered only by table-topping Leipzig, with 16, and eighth-placed Wolfsburg on 15.

Free-scoring Bayern have allowed 21 goals past them - the worst record of any side in the top eight - having endured a woeful start to their title defence by their lofty standards.

Back-to-back 2-1 defeats against Bayer Leverkusen at home and Borussia Monchengladbach away have seen them fall six points off the title pace, with the spike in form following Niko Kovac's sacking failing to be sustained.

However, successive wins in their last two games across the Champions League and Bundesliga have seen Bayern get back into form and they will hope to carry that into their next game to avoid losing further ground in the title race.

Bayern are still awaiting the appointment of a permanent successor to Kovac, with Hansi Flick acting as interim head coach in the meantime.

Freiburg head coach Christian Streich has a list of several injury doubts ahead of Bayern's visit.

Lukas Kubler, Lino Tempelmann, Philipp Lienhart, Jerome Gondorf and Luca Waldschmidt are all expected to be unavailable.

Bayern interim boss is still without a number of key players, particularly in defence.

Lucas Hernandez and Niklas Sule are long-term absentees, while Javi Martinez is a doubt and Jerome Boateng was substituted at half-time against Werder Bremen, although he may not be carrying an injury.

Further forward, Kingsley Coman is still out and Corentin Tolisso remains a doubt, while youngsters Fiete Arp and Mickael Cuisance are also still struggling for fitness.

Freiburg possible starting lineup:
Flekken; Gulde, Koch, Heintz; Schmid, Haberer, Hofler, Gunter; Sallai, Holer; Petersen

Bayern Munich possible starting lineup:
Neuer; Kimmich, Pavard, Alaba, Davies; Goretzka, Thiago; Gnabry, Coutinho, Perisic; Lewandowski

We say: Freiburg 1-2 Bayern Munich

Bayern are a real force in attack and are coming into this one off the back of a thumping victory, while Freiburg are struggling to maintain their strong early start. The hosts are solid at the back, however, and are unlikely to be on the end of a drubbing, but they may not have enough going forward to trouble the reigning champions.
