Preview: Dallas vs. St Louis City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Major League Soccer clash between Dallas and St Louis City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Dallas and St Louis City will continue their MLS fixture in the 50th minute at Toyota Stadium on Wednesday after it was cancelled back on matchday 11 due to inclement weather with the score tied at 0-0.

The Toros are winless in their last four domestic fixtures, falling 2-1 at home to Nashville SC on Saturday, while St Louis moved into first in the Western Conference with a 3-0 win versus the Houston Dynamo.

Entering this encounter with just two points from their last four games, it is the longest winless run for the hosts since Nico Estevez took charge.

This recent slump came when Dallas looked to be getting its footing, earning at least a point in all but one of their last nine fixtures, before losing 2-1 at Sporting Kansas City at the end of May.

They have conceded in five successive MLS games after posting consecutive clean sheets at Minnesota United (0-0) and Austin FC (1-0 win).

In 2022, this team only suffered three regular-season defeats at Toyota Stadium, but following their slip-up to the Boys in Gold over the weekend, they are only one loss away from matching that mark with eight and a half more home matches to play in Frisco.

The Toros have given up six points over the campaign when scoring the opening goal, two of which occurred at home against the Portland Timbers (1-1) and Houston Dynamo (1-1).

St Louis are back to being the offensive juggernaut we remember from the early portion of the campaign, currently on a three-match winning run, outscoring their opponents 10-1 over that stretch.

Bradley Carnell's men have achieved the unthinkable this season, claiming 28 points, nine wins, 32 goals and a +18-goal difference after 14 encounters, all league records for an expansion side at this stage of an inaugural campaign.

Most of those impressive numbers have come at home, though St Louis have not been quite as potent on the road, winless in four successive matches in all competitions as the visitors, failing to find the back of the net in two of those encounters.

They have conceded in five of their six away contests over the MLS campaign, giving up the opener in three of the previous four games played in all competitions.

Since April, St Louis are winless when trailing or tied going into half time, giving up just one goal in the opening 45 minutes of their last nine MLS matches.

Team News

FC Dallas forward Jesus Ferreira (10) celebrates his opening goal with teammates on April 9, 2023© Reuters

Over the weekend, Dallas were without Ema Twumasi due to a sore ankle, Paxton Pomykal has a left quad strain, Tsiki Ntsabeleng is dealing with a knee sprain, Sebastian Lletget and Paul Arriola are having issues with their right thighs and Tarik Scott is done for the season.

Jader Obrian had their only strike against Nashville, while their leading scorer Jesus Ferreira (nine), has not found the back of the net at home since notching a brace in a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Maarten Paes is seeking his first clean sheet at home on the current campaign, with his last one in the 2023 regular season coming in their 1-0 win at Austin when Ferreira had the only goal.

Klauss missed another match for St Louis over the weekend and will be questionable for this one due to a quad strain, Rasmus Alm came on as a substitute despite previously sustaining an abdominal injury, Caden Glover is dealing with some sore ribs, Joakim Nilsson continues to recover from a knee injury and Jared Stroud is eligible to return after missing their weekend fixture with a yellow card suspension.

Eduard Lowen has goals in three consecutive matches, the longest streak by any St Louis player, as he and Nicholas Gioacchini each netted their fifth of the season, with Tomas Ostrak putting home his second and Roman Burki picking up his fourth clean sheet.

Alm scored their last away goal in this competition, but it was not enough to defeat the Colorado Rapids as Michael Barrios levelled that match in injury time with the two sides playing to a 1-1 draw.

Dallas possible starting lineup:
Paes; Ibeagha, Tafari, Martinez, Farfan; Cerrillo, Quignon, Norris, Velasco; Obrian, Ferreira

St Louis City possible starting lineup:
Burki; Nerwinski, Bartlett, Parker, Hiebert; Blom, Lowen, Ostrak, Vassilev, Perez; Gioacchini

We say: Dallas 0-0 St Louis City

Ferreira has had a lot on his shoulders since Arriola went down with an injury, and we expect the Toros to employ a defensive approach on Wednesday and hang back given the firepower in St Louis.

St. Louis are not nearly as aggressive or sharp in the attacking third on the road as they are at home, but given their solid defensive work over their recent homestand, we think they should be able to claim a point.
