Getafe comeback downs Sporting Gijon

Getage score twice in as many second-half minutes to come from behind and beat Sporting Gijon 2-1 in their La Liga relegation battle.

Getafe scored twice in as many second-half minutes to come from behind and beat relegation rivals Sporting Gijon 2-1 at the Estadio Municipal El Molinon this evening.

Gijon had the chance to climb out of the relegation zone with a win, but they remain two points from safety having been hit by a quickfire double from Fran Escriba's men.

It was the home side who had the first clear sight of goal after just 10 minutes when Miguel Guerrero hit a first-time effort towards goal that forced a good diving save from Guaita.

Gijon would not have to wait much longer for the opener, however, as Guerrero turned provider on the break after he got a lucky bounce in the area, allowing him to pull the ball back to Arnaldo Sanabria for a simple finish from close range.

Guerrero was causing all the major problems as the hosts looked to give themselves a cushion, and he threatened again shortly before the half-hour mark when his volley was well blocked before it could trouble Guaita.

It took until the 57th minute for Getafe to be handed their first major opening of the match, and it was a big one as Stefan Scepovic went down dramatically in the area under pressure from Jorge Mere.

Pedro Leon stepped up for the visitors, but his low spot kick came back off the foot of the post as the hosts remained on course to leapfrog their opponents in the table.

The miss was not to prove costly, however, as Getafe began their comeback just over 10 minutes later when Cala was allowed to steal in all too easily and finish Pablo Sarabia's free kick from close range.

A second arrived shortly afterwards, and this time it was Sarabia who got his own name on the scoresheet, stroking his effort past the keeper having been found unmarked inside the box by Scepovic's reverse pass.

Gijon could not conjure up a response as they fell to a defeat that keeps them in the relegation zone, while Getafe move five points clear of the bottom three.
